Utility Meter Readings
Do you have meter readings from the utility company? Reading data can be entered either manually or uploaded from a file. The best data to use for cost analyses is data retrieved directly from the utility, either as intervals, 15 minute, 30 minute or hourly, or in a Time-of-Use Summary report. We handle all of these data formats. If you have trouble getting any of your data in, contact our Support Team and we can help.
Uploading Interval Data
The easiest method of uploading interval data is to drop your usage intervals into our pre-made interval template.
Using the Template
Our template has three tabs, one each for 15 minute, 30 minute and 1 hour intervals. Cut-and-paste your usage data into the matching interval tab and align it with the usage billing dates.
When you're done pasting your data in, select both columns (dateTime and kWh) and copy to a fresh Excel sheet without column labels, then be sure to save as a CSV. Now you're ready to upload your interval data into Explorer.
Uploading Green Button Data
Green Button is an effort heavily promoted by the White House to empower users with access to data about their energy consumption. Many utilities are making this data available for their residential customers. This XML can be uploaded as-is to Genability.
The format of the Time of Use Summary reports vary from utility to utility. We have created a number of utility-specific Excel templates that take the utility’s format as an input and outputs a CSV to upload to Genability.
- Pacific Gas & Electric’s CMT report A10- E19
- Pacific Gas & Electric’s CMT report A6
- San Diego Gas & Electric’s EnergyWaves report
- Southern California Edison’s CISR report
Follow the instructions in the first tab of the worksheet and at the end of the process (takes less than 5 minutes) you’ll have a CSV file you can upload to Genability. If you have a different file format or utility, you can always contact our Support Team.
Manually Entering Readings
Using Bill Entry and selecting source Readings is best for residential and small commercial customers without time-of-use tariffs. Profiles created through bill entry should not be used with time-of-use tariffs because the source data is not granular enough to project savings accurately.
Readings makes it easy to get 12 months of billing data into a profile quickly. Select your date ranges and enter your kWh and kW values. When you submit, monthly kWh values are converted into hourly intervals.
Viewing your Usage Data Profile
Once created, you can view all the details that comprise your customer’s usage data within their profile. Select their profile and you’ll see a chart of usage by day, with the supporting details in the table below. Click on any column to drill deeper into the usage, all the way down to the 15 minute interval.
Adding and Editing Usage Data
Once you’ve created a usage data profile, you can add additional data (we call them readings -- think meter readings) directly to your customer’s profile. Either enter a new bill (Add A Month) or upload a new set of Readings (Upload a Reading File).
To edit your usage data navigate to the data you want to change in the chart. Then click the Edit button in the top left corner of of the chart and the form will change to allow you to edit the data.
When you edit data, you are editing the original readings as they were entered. That means that if you entered monthly consumption and demand numbers, you will only be able to edit the data at the monthly level. Once you save your edit you will overwrite your original numbers, so be careful when editing usage data.
